Modern Art

While poor Lindsey moaned in pain at home on the couch, I took charge of the children. George spent the day at his school (thank Heaven) and I dragged Luke and Evie to work with me, where they spent a couple hours drawing on my white board and playing games while I snapped at them every five minutes saying, "Be quiet!" or "Hush up now!" or "Don't make me shush you one more time!" Poor kids were troopers.

After I finished up a few loose ends at work, I decided to make it a fun Mommy-kids day. We were off to the museum since it is just plain too hot to do anything outside. We went to The Modern, which is amazing if you've never been there. Luke attends an elementary school with an excellent art program and he has decided that his favorite artists are Andy Warhol, Michelangelo, and Pablo Picasso. They are all very different, but we got to see two Andy Warhol pieces and one Picasso so I thought it was a pretty good trip for him.

We started off with this amazing self portrait of Warhol.

We got there right when the museum opened so we were practically the only people there. They gave the kids these cool sketch books and I told them to take a few minutes and sketch their own self portraits.

I thought I was being super-mom with my creativity and attempt at fun education. We spent about an hour and a half in the museum and another half hour in the gift shop. I'm glad we did this. It was pretty fun.

The Picasso

The piece of art that makes me rethink my career choice.

Evie knew what this was right away.
Do you?

I didn't see it until she told me what it was - paint.

I really should have brought a better camera, but I didn't have a plan at the beginning of the day. Here's one of my favorite pieces.

From the top.

From the bottom.

Some others.

I also asked them to pick out their favorites. Evie had a couple.

I'm not sure what she likes about this stone creation.

She really liked all the colors in this one.

This is my favorite.

I asked Evie to take a picture of me with it.
I'm a little fuzzy.

And this was Luke's favorite.
It's a video of planes taking off and flying in a house.

The entire building is a piece of art. And they have artwork outside too. The kids love to go into this piece and make echos. We spent about 15 minutes in here. You can see how large it is by comparing it to the car parked behind it and the trees beside it.

Unfortunately we had to go back to my work for a couple hours after lunch and then we went grocery shopping. It was not their favorite day. But, I enjoyed it!

You ARE super mom! I think it's so neat that they got to do this with you. I bet they'll remember it for a long time as a neat and special day.

I hope that's how they remember it, but I have my doubts. Thanks Angie!

I think it is a great idea to expose them to culture. I'm sure they will remember the museum as an extra special event.

I love the tube of paint and Evie's reaction to it! I want to go to that museum!
