Lawyering

It is discouraging to read repeatedly articles like this one:

. . . it's no surprise that lawyers have one of the highest rates of suicide, many of us would choose another profession if we could, and some of us are headed for substance abuse and depression.

(an excerpt from It's Never Too Late: Finding Happiness In Your Legal Career by Kristin Scheel, published in The November 2011 Texas Bar Journal).

I urge everyone who contemplates becoming an attorney to really do your research. Divorce is also quite common among attorneys. It is hardly an easy profession and sometimes it doesn't even pay all that well.

We also have the highest rates of alcoholism and drug abuse of any other profession. Stinks.

I know lawyers are often the butt end of jokes but honestly, I have a lot of respect for anyone who can make it through law school and go on to change their little piece of the world. :)
